The History

Inception and Objective

Registered on 8 August 1968, the formation of Koperasi Serbaguna Malaysia Berhad (KSM) was spearheaded by Tan Sri Dr. Lee San Choon, then MCA Youth Chief. The primary objective behind its establishment was to consolidate the resources of individuals of modest means, fostering a cooperative society where members could extend mutual aid, guided by the principle of “One for All and All for One”.

Membership and Regulation

Membership to KSM is open to all Malaysian citizens aged 18 years and above, irrespective of race, religion, or political affiliation. Governed by the Co-operative Societies Act 1993, along with its accompanying regulations and the organization’s own By-laws and Rules, Koperasi Serbaguna Malaysia Berhad (KSM) operates as a legal entity. The management of KSM is vested in its Board, comprising 15 members elected by delegates during the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Operations and Activities

Authorized under its By-laws, KSM engages in various businesses and activities deemed beneficial to its members. Rooted in cooperative principles, the society operates under the ethos of “One For All and All For One”, reflecting its commitment to collective prosperity.

Key Events and Meetings

Koperasi Serbaguna Malaysia Berhad (KSM) hosts two significant events annually:

1. Annual General Meeting (AGM): The AGM is a pivotal gathering attended by delegates, where crucial decisions are made regarding the society’s affairs and future directions.
2. Area Meeting: Held once every two years, in compliance with KSM By-Laws and the Co-operative Societies Act 1993 (Amendment) 2007 [Act 502], the Area Meeting serves as another platform for discussions and decision-making, focusing on regional concerns and initiatives.

These events serve as forums for deliberation and decision-making, ensuring that the cooperative’s governance remains transparent and inclusive, aligning with its ethos of collective action and mutual benefit.

Business

Taxi Operation

The taxi operation segment has remained a consistent revenue stream for Koperasi Serbaguna Malaysia Berhad (KSM). In 2015, it contributed an income of RM136,080. Presently, there are 8 vacant permits available for registration, indicating potential for expansion or optimization within this sector.

Bintang Tinjar II Plantation Investment Scheme

Under this scheme, KSM’s board intends to develop an 8,000-acre Oil Palm Plantation within 2 to 3 years. The plantation will be subdivided into 16,000 units, with each unit comprising half an acre. KSM plans to allocate 6,000 units for sale to its members for investment purposes. Priced at RM8,800 per half-acre unit, the project will unfold over 2 years, with 3,000 units slated for sale annually. Members stand to benefit from this initiative through a structured return-of-investment mechanism.

Housing Development – Kuantan Housing Project

The forthcoming Kuantan Housing Project marks a significant milestone for KSM, representing its first housing development endeavor since 1997. Phase 1 of the project will feature 30 units of Double-Storey Semi-D homes. The commencement of the project hinges upon approval from the Kuantan City Council (MPK). Notably, KSM members residing in Pahang will enjoy priority access to purchase these units at preferential rates. Subsequent phases of the project are poised to follow suit, reflecting the cooperative’s commitment to expanding its real estate portfolio.

Insurance

KSM offers a comprehensive suite of insurance plans tailored to the diverse needs of its members. These plans encompass medical insurance, personal accident (PA) coverage, and general insurance, spanning areas such as motor, fire, and hospitalization.

Logistics Investment

Perceptive Logistics Sdn. Bhd., an affiliated company of KSM, stands as a prominent player in the transportation services sector since its establishment in 2001. Renowned for its unwavering commitment to service excellence and value delivery, the company has earned accolades, consistently ranking among the top 10 container haulage service providers nationwide.

Nilai Shop Office

In a strategic move towards long-term investment, KSM has acquired 12 units of 3-Storey Shop Offices in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. This acquisition underscores the cooperative’s proactive approach to diversifying its asset portfolio and capitalizing on lucrative investment opportunities.
