Koperasi MBJB (Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru)

The inception of Koperasi MBJB, also known as Koperasi Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB), traces back to the late 1990s, marked by the visionary leadership of Tuan Haji Asri bin Amat, who assumed the role of administrative director. Under his stewardship, the groundwork for establishing the cooperative was initiated, laying the foundation for a transformative venture.

Continued Endeavors in Administration

The commitment to establishing Koperasi MBJB (Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru) persisted through subsequent administrative transitions. Tuan Haji Abdul Ghazali bin Karim and later, Puan Haniza binti Hasan, former Assistant Director of Administration, played pivotal roles in advancing the proposal, ensuring its continuity and progress over the years.

Proposals and Advocacy

The aspiration to establish Koperasi MBJB gained traction during the biennial general meeting of the Johor Bahru City Services Association (PPBJB) on 28 June 2007. A motion presented by Tuan Haji Mohd Siari bin Juraimi and supported by Tuan Haji Wan Azmi bin Ahmad advocated for the creation of the cooperative. The proposed activities included the sale of computers, office equipment, household necessities, and real estate, aimed at providing PPBJB members access to quality items at affordable prices.

Mobilization and Formation

Following intense deliberations and unanimous support from PPBJB members, a cooperative committee was formed, comprising representatives from various PPBJB committees. Extensive discussions, drafting of cooperative by-laws, selection of suitable names, membership drives, and preparatory meetings ensued. A significant milestone was achieved with the convening of a general meeting on 18 June 2009, attracting 94 prospective members at the JOTiC Johor Bahru Auditorium.

Registration and Recognition

The culmination of efforts led to the formal registration of Koperasi MBJB (Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru) by the Co-operative Societies Commission of Malaysia (SKM) on 29 December 2009. The cooperative’s by-laws, approved during the initial general meeting, paved the way for its establishment as a basic cooperative society with limited liability, in accordance with the Cooperative Act 1993. Subsequently, a cooperative board comprising 15 members assumed administrative responsibilities.
